Hydralyte donated Oral Rehydration Solutions to help students at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center educate communities in Guatemala about the importance of clinical hydration
CAMBRIDGE, MA (May 16, 2018) – Hydralyte, a clinically formulated oral rehydration solution (ORS), today announced its donation of electrolyte solutions to support medical mission trips completed by Physician Assistant (PA) students from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW). The product donation from Hydralyte enabled this group of students to bring the benefits of clinical hydration to the people of Sarstún, Guatemala, who lack access to effective hydration for daily life.
In collaboration with Refuge International, PA students at UTSW recently traveled to Sarstún, Guatemala to deliver medical aid. Refuge International is a non-profit, volunteer organization. They are committed to the goal of improving lives in Guatemala through the development of programs in areas that lack suitable healthcare, adequate nutrition, clean water, and good education.
The medical mission teams, comprised of PA students and other volunteers, traveled to local clinics, providing life-changing surgeries that include: clubfoot repair, hernia repairs, and gallbladder removals, which are not routinely available to people living in rural Guatemala. Students also assisted in the education and care for visitors of each clinic. These trips offer a valuable inter-professional experience that allow students the opportunity to work in a rural medicine environment and additionally utilize a team approach to patient care.
“The samples donated to us by Hydralyte were an integral part of our treatment plans for patients with diarrhea, dehydration, and also constipation,” said Patricie Burnett, PA Student, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. “Many people in this region of Guatemala do not drink an adequate amount of water and therefore these samples are very instrumental in their lives.”
“The opportunity to share rehydration solutions with communities in need, all over the world, is core to Hydralyte’s mission of making clinical hydration accessible to anybody who needs it,” said Charles Whiting, CEO, Hydralyte. “We’re excited to support groups like the PA students at UTSW and their medical mission trips that provide aid, including hydration, in rural communities.”
